## Probable cause

failure of pilot to adequately compensate for wind conditions on final approach and attain a proper touchdown point for landing. A factor relating to the accident was: the unfavorable wind condition.

## Sequence of events

In NTSB's coding before 2008 (https://www.ntsb.gov/GILS/Documents/codman.pdf).

- Undershoot, approach - vfr pattern - final approach
  - weather condition - unfavorable wind (contributing factor)
  - compensation for wind conditions - inadequate, pilot in command (cause)
  - proper touchdown point - not attained, pilot in command (cause)
- In flight collision with terrain/water, landing
  - terrain condition - loose gravel/sandy
- Nose over, landing

## Analysis

The pilot checked the windsock and then made a downwind entry for landing. He reported that on final approach, he had a quartering headwind until just before landing. He said that just before touchdown, the wind stopped, and the airplane stalled (settled) onto sandy terrain about 50 feet short of the runway threshold and flipped over.

## Factual narrative

On October 8, 1996, about 1315 Pacific daylight time, a Cessna 182Q, N759RE, landed short of runway 33 at Nehalem Bay State airport near Manzanita, Oregon. The airplane was substantially damaged, but the private pilot and his two passengers were not injured.

The pilot stated that he checked the wind sock and then made a downwind entry for runway 33. He said that, on final approach, he had a quartering headwind until just prior to touchdown, when the wind stopped. The airplane stalled and flipped over in the sand about 50 feet short of the runway threshold.

## FAA reports on this event (1)

The FAA's own accident and incident reports, matched to the aircraft by N-number and date (OpenAirDocs).

- [Accident 19961008031279A](https://openairdocs.org/incident/19961008031279A), Oct 8, 1996: Cessna 182Q, Manzanita, OR, Substantial damage. Reported wind stopped on final. Landed 50FT short of runway threshold.

From the NTSB's public API. Aircraft are matched to registry aircraft by N-number and event date, checked against the reported serial number, make and model; the registry's history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.
