BWI CREW REPORTED FIRST OFFICERS DIRECTIONAL GYRO FAILED.  EMERGENCY DECLARED FLIGHT RETURNED BWI LANDED WITHOUT INCIDENT.  AIRCRAFT REMOVED FROM SERVICE.  REPLACED NR 1 DIRECTIONAL GYRO.  SYSTEM GROUND CHECKED NORMAL OPERATION CLOSED.
