FIRST OFFICER`S MULTI-PURPOSE CONTROL DISPLAY UNIT FAILED.  EMERGENCY DECLARED.  FLIGHT RETURNED TO DEPARTURE.  UNEVENTFUL LANDING.  REMOVED AND REPLACED LEFT FLAT PANEL DISPLAY UNIT IAW AMM 34-22-11.  OPS CHECKED GOOD.
