AIRCRAFT WAS NOT GROUNDED: LEC GEN DRIVE L1 ILLUM IN FLT. L1 GENERATOR WAS DISCONNECTED PER THE CHECKLIST. GENERATOR DISCONNECT WAS VERIFIED BY THE AMBER X ON THE ECLECTIC SYNOPTIC. DECESION WAS MADE TO DIVERT TO LAX. AN EMERGENCY WAS DECLARED AND AIRCRAFT WAS OVERWEIGHT FOR UNEVENTFUL LANDING. MAINTENANCE  REPLACED ENG NR 1 L1 VFSG IAW JOB CARD 78L40024002 AND AMM 24-21-09.
