FLIGHT 2236 - MSP - FLIGHT CREW REPORTED PFD NR 2 FAILED AND PFD NR 2 STARTED SMOKING UPON FAILURE.  EWR MX REMOVED AND REPLACED PFD AND PERFORMED OPERATIONAL CHECK SUCCESSFULLY.  ACFT WAS APPROVED TO RETURN TO SERVICE.
