ACFT WAS ON TAXI PREPARING FOR TAKEOFF WHEN CONTROL TOWER CONTACTED THE PILOT TO ADVISE OF SIGNIFICANT SMOKE FROM LT ENGINE EXHAUST.  PILOT SECURED ENGINE AND RETURNED TO FBO.
