DURING ENGINE RUN UP, STRONG EXHAUST FUMES WHEN APU WAS ON.  DEFERRED IAW MEL.   PERFORMED FIM 49-55, TASK 802.  INSPECTED APU COMPRESSOR INLET PLENUM FOR FLUIDS OR BLOCKAGES, NONE NOTED. AREA WAS CLEAR.  NO UNWANTED MATERIALS FOUND. NO LEAKS NOTED. RAN APU WITH PACKS ON & APU BLEED. NO FUMES OR UNWANTED ODORS NOTED. DEFERRAL CLEARED, PLACARD REMOVED. OK TO CONTINUE SERVICE. ALSO PERFORMED AN APU BITE PROCEDURE, NO CURRENT FAULTS NOTED.
