GATE AGENT REPORTED L1 DOOR HANDLE ARRIVED IN THE VERTICAL POSITION & NO TENSION ON HANDLE.  REMOVED L1 EXTERIOR HANDLE IAW CMM 52-16-12 (HC 332418) FOUND SPRING BROKEN IN DOOR HANDLE. REPLACED THE RETURN SPRING IAW CMM 52-16-12, OPS CHKD NORMAL. INSTALLED L1 DOOR EXTERIOR HANDLE IAW CMM 52-16-12. (9486902) AIRCRAFT WAS GROUNDED
