CAPTAINS INERTIAL VERTICAL SPEED INDICATOR SCREEN WENT BLANK, THEN THE SMELL OF SMOKE WAS IN THE COCKPIT.  INSPECTED SYS & FOUND NR 1 INERTIAL VERTICAL SPEED INDICATOR DEFECTIVE.
