DURING PREFLIGHT INSP, AIRCREW NOTICED SMOKE FROM TOP STEP OF AIRSTAIR DOOR.  GROUND MX CREW R & R THE LIGHT BULB IN THE TOP STEP LIGHT ASSY.  PERFORMED OPS CHECK OF THE AIRSTAIR DOOR LIGHTS AND SYS CHECKED SATISFACTORY.
