GENERATOR LIGHT ILLUMINATED IN CRUISE FLIGHT FOLLOWED IMMEDIATELY BY A STRONG ODOR OF BURNING AND VISIBLE SMOKE IN THE COCKPIT.  ELECTED TO LAND.  STARTER GENERATOR WAS ON FIRE.
