AT CRUISE ON FLIGHT 3211 CREW REPORTED WARNING MSG PITCH TRIM BACKUP INOPERATIVE.  AUTOPILOT WAS ENGAGED & DECLARED EMERGENCY.  THE ACFT WAS REMOVED FROM SERVICE.   CORRECTIVE ACTION.
