AFTER TAKEOFF, ATC TRANSPONDER WENT INOP.  ACCOMPLISHED AIR TURNBACK TO CHS WITHOUT INCIDENT.  REPLACED TRANSPONDER, SYSTEM OPS CHECKED GOOD PER MM 34.
