From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

Narrative: aircraft in cruise flight from sioux city to airlake at 7500 feet altitude, when aircraft reportedly "lurched". Pilot retarded power and heard a loud bang. Power was reduced and cabin filled with smoke, probably due to engine oil on the exhaust system. Aircraft was vectored to fbl by air traffic (msp approach) and made a safe landing. No further damage to the aircraft was reported, and there were no injuries to the pilot or his two passengers. Not a pilot deviation. Reported that engine cylinder #3 was worked on prior to that cylinder's piston rod failing and exiting through the engine case.
