From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

Narrative: on 3/13/95, Mr. James r. bower was pilot in command of Cessna 172, N8844Z, and was conducting a VFR, instructional flight from the tazwell county airport to a private airport (Herold) in Craigsville, WV. Two student pilots were aboard Cessna N8844Z, but Mr. Bower, a CFI, took the controls on base leg at Herold Airport and made the landing. N8844Z ballooned or bounced back into the air after the initial flare and then touched down nose first. The nose gear fork failed, causing loss of the nose wheel and eventual loss of the entire nose strut. The aircraft continued down the grass runway for approximately 300 feet, sliding on the engine cowling and the main landing gear. The aircraft sustained minor damage and Mr. Bower and one of the student pilots sustained minor injuries (scratches). The aircraft and all components were removed from the runway prior to FAA or ntbs notification. privacy data omitted This incident closed with this report. Witness: alan sutthin privacy data omitted
