Narrative:on June 17, 1995, at approximately 1320 MST, a private pilot,(identity expunged), pilot in command of N54007, a Cessna 172P, while enroute on a cross-country flight, made an emergency landing on a road 1 mile southeast of Buckeye airport, Buckeye, AZ. No damage was done to the aircraft andno injuries were reported. Investigation revealed that the aircraft had no fuel in either fuel tank. According to the pilot, he had taken off that morning from deer valley airport (dvt) on a cross-country to chiriaco summit airport (L77), chiriaco, CA.(identity expunged) stated he did complete a flight plan, however he was used to flying another aircraft from westwind aviation, the FBO who he rented the aircraft from, that had extended range fuel tanks (62 gallons usable) instead of the normal fuel tanks (40 gallons usable). He further stated that the FBO had provided him with an aircraft list that indicated basic empty weight, fuel quantity, and other information to be used for flight planning purposes. (Identity expunged) stated that because N54007 was a new aircraft addition to the fleet the numbers had not yet been printed on the sheet. (Identity expunged) stated because the number was not on the sheet he decided to use the numbers for the aircraft he was used to flying and consequently flight planned for an aircraft having long range fuel tanks. N54007 has standard fuel tanks. (Identity expunged) estimated L77 using approximately 20 gallons of gas at an altitude of 4500 feet MSL. (Identity expunged) stated it actually took him a little over 2 hours to complete the flight. He stated he did not refuel at chiriaco summit because they did not have fuel and he believed he had enough fuel to make it back based on the idea he had long range fuel tanks. (Identity expunged) flight planned the trip back to dvt and estimated it would take him approximately 20 gallons of gas at 5500 feet MSL. N54007 experienced fuel exhaustion near Buckeye airport, approximately 35 miles southwest of dvt. According to (identity expunged), approximately 2 hours. The range of the Cessna 172P according to the pilot's operating handbook is approximately 4 hours and 25 minutes at 65 percent power and 8000 feet. This report is closed.
As the FAA filed it
NARRATIVE:ON JUNE 17, 1995, AT APPROXIMATELY 1320 MST, A PRIVATE PILOT,(IDENTITY EXPUNGED), PILOT IN COMMAND OF N54007, A CESSNA 172P, WHILE ENROUTE ON A CROSS-COUNTRY FLIGHT, MADE AN EMERGENCY LANDING ON A ROAD 1 MILE SOUTHEAST OF BUCKEYE AIRPORT, BUCKEYE, AZ.
