From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

Narrative: the engine of Piper N25089 failed during a VFR cross-country instructional flight from austin, TX, to galveston, TX. The instructor pilot made a forced landing in a field 1/2 NM south of johnnie volk field airport, near Hitchcock, TX. A post incident inspection revealed that N25089 sustained minor damage to the left main landing gear and the left wing tip. Further investigation revealed that while the fuel tanks did not suggest enough fuel for flight operations. After fuel was added, the engine started and appeared to operate normally. Fuel computations based on conditions at the time of the incident indicated that there should have been about an hour of reserve fuel after the completion of the trip. The instructor pilot successfully completed a section 609 re-examination. An m or d report will be filed, if later maintenance inspections indicate a fuel system component malfunction. This report closes this incident.
