From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

Narrative: immediately after departing runway 18 at yelland field in Ely, NV the pilot of a RV-6, N6880R, experienced a "down draft" condition and collided with flat terrain. The pilot stated that the aircraft was airborne over the 1000 foot marker and climb out was normal until about 60-70 feet AGL. At this point, the aircraft started to descend. The pilot attempted to increase airspeed by lowering the nose, however the aircraft increased its descent rate without increasing airspeed. After maintaining runway heading for about one mile at only 30 feet AGL, the pilot stated that he opted to make an off-airport landing. The pilot stated that the winds were very strong (150 degree @20,G40), and believes these strong winds crossing a mountain ridge located 5 miles to the southeast caused the down draft condition. He also stated that he did not experience any mechanical difficulties with the aircraft. No pilot deviation. This report is closed.

As the FAA filed it
