From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

Narrative: pilot was briefed that one runway was open at Truckee, CA. Pilot admitted that when he saw the plowed runway and parallel taxiway he was confused and thought the smooth snowy surface between them was the runway and attempted the landing on that. On touch-down he said he became a snow plow and then flipped over in the soft deep snow. There were no injuries to the pilot or one passenger and the aircraft sustained minor damages as follows: propeller blades bent, prop dome caved in, lower cowling bent, nose gear bent aft, and minor dents in top of fuselage and vertical fin. The pilot voluntarily took dual instruction on winter flying techniques at Truckee-Tahoe Airport later that day and on 01-30-96 rno FSDO operations inspector bob wagner spoke with the instructor of that flight. On February 1, 1996, the pilot was counseled by operations inspector bob wagner from the rno FSDO and considering the post incident instruction it was determined that a reexamination is not required. Incident does not involve a pilot deviation report form 8020-17. This incident and investigation are closed with this report.
