From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

Narrative: on February 6, 1996, at 0624 CST, an ATR-72-202, N721TE, operated by trans states airlines, inc., was enroute to st. louis from peoria when an electric smoke indication on ccas was noticed accompanied by smoke in forward cabin and forward cargo compartments. Mr. Randall wagnon, pilot-in-command of the flight, declared an emergency to ATC and asked for clearance to land at Springfield. The aircraft was diverted to Springfield and landed without incident. Emergency was called out but not used. This incident is closed. A service difficulty report was submitted by the carrier with the following findings. Maintenance deferred left pack system and ferried the aircraft to st. louis. Maintenance then removed and replaced the left engine due to an internal oil leak which was causing the oil to find its way to the left pack, causing the smoking conditions. Ground runs and operational checks were performed, all good. The dmi was cleared and aircraft was returned to service.
