Narrative: on Tuesday, February 7, 1996, Dr. Clyde smith departed mem enroute to mbt on an IFR flight plan in a Piper, PA32R-301, N923CN. During descent to mbt Dr. Smith encountered VMC conditions, cancelled his IFR flight plan and initiated a visual approach to runway 18 at mbt. Upon touchdown, acft veered left on wet runway into a snowbank alongside the runway. Leftmain gear down lock mechanism failed and left main gear collapsed.
