From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

Aircraft descended into an off airport landing after reaching approax 200FT AGL during departure from airport. (.4)after takeoff, the airplane would not climb and began to settle back on the runway. The passenger heard the stall horn come on and off. The pilot made an emergency landing beyond the overrun area. Examination of the engine revealed low compression readings on all cylinders, all four pistons badly scored and burned and leaking exhaust valves. (-23) at approximately 0745 MDT on 06/08/96, pilot departed the Custer County Airport for a pleasure flight to belle fourche, SD. The aircraft had two occupants, temperature was approximately 65 degrees f and cavu with light westerly wind. Aircraft experienced a loss of power and poor climb performance. Pilot elected to make emergency landing to only immmediately available clear area when it appeared that the aircraft would not clear obstacles safely. The landing resulted in substantial damage to the aircraft and minor injuries to the passenger.
