From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

Lost power on liftoff after touch and go. Landed. Ran off end. Hit fence. Fuel tanks were empty. (-23) Cessna N3197T departed brookville airpark (I62) to Versailles (ves) for dual instruction. After 4 take off landings they did a final touch and go, on climb out, between 100-300 feet in altitude the engine quit. Attempted landing, ran off the end of the runway, down a hill through a perimeter fence and ditch where the aircraft came to rest on SR242. Injuries were minor, substantial aircraft damage. Highway patrol at the scene determined there was no gas in the tanks. Inspection of the aircraft on Monday June 17, 1996 revealed no gas in the sumps, none in the fuel line from tanks and the tanks were not ruptured to the emergency shut off. It was determined the aircraft had flown 4.2 hours since it was last fueled, not 3.5 hours the pilot claimed. This investigation is closed with this report.
