From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

Narrative: on July 20, 1996, at approximately 0800, a Cessna 206, operated by Mr. Donald kinney, was on a scenic flight from red lodge, Montana, with intentions to return to red lodge. All indications were normal until about three minutes after leveling off at 11,200 feet. The engine RPM dropped 400 to 500 RPM. The pilot turned to return to red lodge. After the turn the prop RPM went to over 3000 RPM and pilot was unable to control RPM. Pilot pulled manifold pressure back. Oil temperature started to rise and oil pressure started to decrease. Shortly after oil temp made a rapid rise and oil pressure made a rapid decrease. Pilot decided to make an emergency landing at switch back ranch, between rosco and luther in a hay field. They landed successfully. No injuries, no damage to airframe. M&d report will be submitted after engine tear down. Mechanic to assist Mr. Frank felky.
