From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

Narrative: on July 13, 1996, at approximately 0830 EDT, a Mooney M20E, N5514Q, registered to eric j. softley experienced a collapse of the landing gear on rollout on runway 08 at ft. Lauderdale executive airport while on a personal flight. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed at the time and no flight plan was filed. The pilot, the sole occupant, was not injured. The flight originated at tamiami airport on July 13, 1996. The pilot stated that when he lowered the gear, the gear down green light had burned out. He verified the mechanical lever was locked in the gear down position and received verification from the tower that the gear appeared to be down. He continued his approach and landed. On rollout the left gear started to retract followed by the right and nose. The aircraft slipped off the runway onto a taxi way receiving minor damage. Examination of the landing gear after this occurrence revealed it may not have been properly rigged causing it to collapse. Due to the damage to the retract/downlock rod, a rigging check could not be accomplished. Examination of the landing gear components revealed no failure of any gear component.
