From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

Narrative: on August 2, 1996, at approximately 2230 PST, a Piper seneca ii (PA-34-200T), N47766, operated by Dr. Gordon levin, a certificated pilot, damaged the left main landing gear on roll out after an uneventful landing at San Jose International Airport (iap), CA. The damage to the aircraft was limited to the left main gear forward and aft support fitting assembly's, minor sheet metal damage, landing gear linkage, and the landing gear door. There was no apparent wing spar damage. The damage is determined to be minor. Dr. Levin stated that at approximately 2200L he departed monterey airport enroute to San Jose iap. His flight was VFR and no flight plan was filed. Dr. Levin stated that he did two (2) "touch and go" landings and one full stop landing on runway 30R. His third (final)landing was uneventful and not a hard landing. After roll-out and while taxiing back to his parking spot he noticed the aircraft was hard to steer and that it crabbed to the right. A visual inspection of the aircraft show the aircraft landing gear did not appear to be straight. He advised a mechanic to inspect his aircraft on August 5, 1996. A visual inspection of the aircraft on August 6, 1996 of the left main landing gear area revealed that three (3) bolts holding the aft supporting fitting in place were missing, only the top inboard bolt is in place. The aft support fitting rotated in a ccw direction allowing the left trunnion to move, thus damaging the forward support fitting and other gear linkage. Directly aft of the aft support fitting an inspection panel was removed. In this area three (3) nuts were found and the remaining bolt and nut was loose. A review of the aircraft logbook determined that the maintenance was performed in this area on November 1, 1995. privacy data omitted No FAA 8020-11 generated.
