Narrative: malfunction or defect report FAA form 8010-4 submitted. On August 7, 1996 at approximately 1630 cdst a Cessna, C172N, N4949G, made an emergency landing in a hay field on county hwy mm, Cadott, chippewa county, Wisconsin. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed. No flight plan was filed. The pilot stated, he experienced a rough running engine at lever cruise flight followed by degraded power output and was unable to maintain altitude. On site evaluation of the engine revealed the magnetos points were not opening due to excessive wear on the point's cam follower. This wear was accelerated by a heat build-up, on the magneto shaft, generated by a failed rear bearing. A malfunction or defect report, FAA form 8010-4, has been submitted pertinent to this part failure.
