From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

Narrative: on Sunday, August 11, 1996 at 1015 PDT, Mr. Naotaka kawaguchi, departed san bernardino international airport (sbd) in Piper seneca PA-34-200, N2844T to practice maneuvers and landings with his student Mr. Takemichi jogaki. At 1155 PDT, Mr. Jogaki was practicing touch and go's at sbd when the nose gear collapsed within one to two seconds following the fifth landing. Upon further investigation, the top of the trunnion had failed by cracking around the bolt that connects the upper drag link to the nose gear trunnion. The metal was severely corroded. This part was the original part from the date of manufacture in 1972. Several sdrs existed noting the same problem due to lack of lubrication fittings. A malfunction or defect report was submitted by the operator. This incident investigation is now closed.
