From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

Narrative: Mr. Gunn is owner of N5543Q & the pilot during this incident. He had one non-pilot passenger aboard the aircraft. On the morning of August 26, 1996, Mr. Gunn made a business flight from Kansas City downtown airport (mkc) to the st. joseph rosecrans airport (stj). During this flight he obtained a class b airspace clearance from mci ATCT. On the return flight, he elected to remain clear of the class b airspace. Mr. Gunn departed the stj airport on a heading of 170 degrees and climbed to an altitude of 2,100 MSL. He planned to fly below the class b airspace and use the "moving map" feature of his GPS navigation unit to circle east of the 6NM surface area of the class b airspace. After circling east of mci, Mr. Gunn said that a heading of 190 degrees would have taken him to the mkc airport. As N5543Q approached the mci area, Mr. Gunn said the GPS unit indicated a failure. At that time he turned to a heading of 120 degrees & contacted mkc control tower. Mkc tower told Mr. Gunn to contact mci approach control & he was notified that N5543Q had penetrated the class b airspace. Mr. Gunn said that he did not have an aeronautical chart aboard the airplane on this flight. Mr. Gunn is a retired airline pilot privacy data omitted
