From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

Narrative: on Saturday, September 20, 1996, at 1445 PST, a Grumman S2-F, N5234A, was taking off on runway 29R, at Fresno Air Terminal (fat) and the pilot apparently retracted the landing gear when the airplane had not achieved a positive rate of climb. Subsequently the aircraft made contact with the pavement with the landing gear retracted and came to an abrupt halt (about 300 feet). The damage to the propellers and engines was considered minor and no injury resulted to the three passengers. The ATP rated pilot got a cut lip when the airplane suddenly stopped due to ground contact. The weather was VFR and no flight plan was filed.
