From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

Narrative: notified that an amateur-built aircraft, model evans VP-1, registration number N5823K, crashed while attempting to land at Grants Pass airport runway 30 after the pilot, raymond john bawden, reported his engine suddenly quitting. Pilot stated that the engine began sputtering while he circled the airport, then finally quit and he was unable to restart it. Damage to the aircraft is considered minor and limited to a wing tip, nose gear collapse, and a prop strike after the gear collapsed. A check of airman records revealed no one by this name with a FAA pilot certificate or current medical. Mr. Bawden failed to provide pilot certification at the scene for the investigating deputy sheriff and could not produce a certificate, a copy of a certificate, OR a certificate number during follow-up telephone conversations. This incident is closed.
