From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

Narrative: pilot reported departing Kansas city international airport (mci), Kansas city, Missouri at approximately 0745 CDT with one pilot-rated passenger for a VFR flight to ottawa municipal airport (owi), ottawa, Kansas. Approximately 15 minutes into the flight, the engine began to sputter and run rough for about 20 to 30 seconds followed by a completed loss of power. A field was selected and an emergency checklist completed. The pilot accomplished an off-airport forced landing on a field of newly-sown winter wheat without damage to the aircraft or injury to the occupants. On-scene investigation revealed a failure of the single magneto drive that provides rotation to the dual magnetos. A malfunction and defect report will be filed. This incident is closed. Mci-fsdo incident no CE97IGA0005.
