From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

Narrative: on 10/25/96, Mr. James m. burgess, a private pilot, cert. # 293465847, departed Bolton field (2I4) at 1300 EDT, in a james m. burgess 2/3 scale P-51-D, N51DZ, an experimental/homebuilt aircraft for pattern work and touch and go landings. At approximately 1319 EDT, Mr. Burgess touched down on runway 22 at the 3500 foot mark. During rollout, the right main landing gear collapsed and the aircraft veered to the right slightly then, the left main landing gear collapsed and the aircraft came to rest 20 feet off the runway. The aircraft damaged two runway taxi lights and the aircraft sustained minor damage. The pilot reported no injuries. Subsequent inspection of N51DZ by ASI jay c. wilkins of the cmh FSDO concluded that the welds for the right and left main landing gear down lock attach brace had failed. The right fractured completely and the left side was cracked. These failures were attributed to improper weld techniques (embrittlement). The aircraft had only 3 hours of flight time recorded since finished.
