From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

Narrative: on November 12, 1996, aircraft 3040X, flown by a student pilot, with the instructor in the right seat landed at abe airport on runway 31. There was a slight crosswind during the approach and the student flaired a little early which caused the aircraft to balloon on the runway. The instructor took control of the aircraft and landed the aircraft on the main gear with an apparent high sink rate. Upon touch-down the left main gear lower scissors broke at the attachment bolt. The main wheel then turned and the aircraft skidded to a stop. Upon inspection of the left main gear scissors the lower link had evidence of being cracked for sometime on the outboard side. The bolts that attach both upper and lower scissors were extremely hard to move due to lack of grease and corrosion. M or d will be filed by the pilot. No fire or injuries, this incident is considered closed.
