From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

Narrative: on Sunday, jan. 26, 1997, N800ME, a Douglas DC-9-14, operated by midwest express airlines, inc., as flight 572, experienced the loss of the retread on the number two main landing gear tire on departure from the denver international airport, CO. The tire tread was reported on the runway by a following united airlines departure. There were approximately five departures between the midwest express flight and the united flight, all by smaller commuter series aircraft that would not have seen the tire tread on the runway surface. After discussion between denver ARTCC and the flight crew, they elected to divert to Omaha, NE where an uneventful landing was made on runway 32L. Maintenance investigation revealed the number two main tire had shed its retread and caused a small dent in the flap directly aft of the left main landing gear truck. The number one and two main tires were removed and replaced and the aircraft ferried to milwaukee, WI for permanent sheet metal repair to the flap. A mechanical interruption and service difficulty report will be submitted to the ord FSDO, GL31. This incident is closed with this report.
