From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

Narrative: on 2/23/97, at (rno) Reno, Nevada, N9099L (citabria 7-gcbc), piloted by Mr. Don walker, hit a taxiway sign during go-around after a crosswind landing attempt. The pilot then flew the damaged airplane to Reno/stead (4SD) where he landed into the wind without further incident. The pilot reported to the owner, Mr. Bob bennett of nevada-cal aero flying club, that he just lost it on touch down, added power to avoid a ditch off the right side of the runway, and hit a taxiway sign with the left wing struts during the go-around. The pilot told Mr. Bennett that he flew the airplane to Reno/stead because he was able to land it there without a crosswind. On 02/25/97, rno FSDO inspectors (j. roberts & g. jestice) examined and photographed the airplane at Reno/stead, Nevada. The following damages were recorded. 1) the left wing main and secondary struts are both bent, bowed, and dented that causes the left wing to have less of a positive camber. 2) there are possible damages inside the left wing where the struts attach as indicated by wrinkles in the wing skin fabric. The pilot and airplane records were checked and determined to be satisfactory. The ELT did not activate. The owner is informed that a ferry permit for flying the airplane should not be issued until appropriate repairs are made. The owner stated that he feels the airplane is totally unairworthy in its present condition and agrees not to fly it without proper repairs. On 02-26-97, inspector g. jestice spoke with the pilot, Mr. Don walker, and Mr. Walker promised to mail a written statement to the Reno FSDO. Inspector g. jestice plans to re-evaluate the certificate privileges of the pilot. See his attached record of phone conversation. This incident and investigation are closed. This incident did not involve a pilot deviation report form 8020-17.

As the FAA filed it
