From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

Narrative: item: aircraft returned to Kansas City International (mci) just after take-off due to reported sparks, from number one engine, by tower and aircraft on approach. Details: number one engine was installed on, aircraft N979AX, at mci by airborne express maintenance personnel. Engine removed for excessive oil consumption, four quarts in three hours. Engine installed had just been overhauled for stage three modification. After take-off, the tower and another aircraft on approach reported sparks coming out of number one engine. Crew did not see any unusual indications on instruments and did not shut down engine. An emergency was declared with equipment standing by; however, an overweight landing was accomplished without incident. Findings: maintenance borescoped the engine at mci and found no evidence of damage. After an engine ground run, the write-up was cleared and aircraft released for flight aircraft departed mci on 13 March at 1300 for wilmington, Ohio (iln). The engine operated without repeat of sparking. Maintenance at iln airborne express, performed further investigations with no findings and released the aircraft to normal line service. This incident (CE97ICM0049) is considered closed.
