From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

Narrative: on Friday, March 28, 1997, at approximately 2000 PST, PIC robert hicks was flying aero commander GA-695-695, N3U, in level flight at 6500 feet with a cruise power setting of 60% when he encountered a 20-40% fluctuation on the left engine. Mr. Hicks reduced the power setting and the fluctuation continued while the RPM increased to 103-105. Mr. Hicks further reduced the power, feathered the propeller, and cleaned up the airplane. Upon further inspection it was discovered by maintenance personnel that the swivel had jammed in the oil filter, the oil bypass button had popped, the oil was discolored darker than normal, and the propeller would not rotate. The maintenance facility took an oil soap sample and is sending the engine to eagle creek aviation crs, who accomplished the last HSI and gear box extension, for an engine teardown. This incident is closed.
