From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

Narrative: on Friday, March 28, 1997, at 1:55 EST, a Cessna 150, N8898U, on an instructional flight, experienced smoke in the cockpit. The instructor took charge of the controls and turned the aircraft back to (iag) about 6 miles and 1800 feet. He vented the cockpit by opening the window and notified iag tower. At 2 miles out, he heard a loud noise and the engine got very rough and oil was noted streaking back on the cowl. The oil pressure dropped when they had the field in sight. He landed on runway 24 without further incident and shut down the engine. The aircraft was towed to Niagara aviation's hangar. Maintenance found the #3 cylinder had broken off about 1" above the mounting flange. The engine only had 144 hours since overhaul. M or d report will follow. This incident is considered closed.
