Narrative: on 12, may 1997, at 1300 PDT, a Beechcraft V-35 with CFI william burk pilot in command in the right seat, and aircraft owner william becker in the left seat, departed gillispie field (see). The purpose of this flight was for Mr. Becker to receive instruction on complex aircraft. After departure they practiced stalls, turns and general airwork. The flight then proceeded to Ramona Airport (L39), where they completed 4 touch/go's. at that time the pilot decided that they needed a break and landed at L39 for approximately 20 minutes. They later departed L39 and decided to attempt one more touch/go before returning to see. In the process of completing the turn to final, the pilot observed a helicopter maneuvering below them in the traffic pattern. They questioned why they had not heard the traffic on the radio. At this point the pilot informed the CFI that the radio was not on the required frequency for L39. As the pilot attempted to reset the radio the CFI told the pilot that airspeed was getting low and flying the aircraft was more important. At this point they landed the aircraft but failed to extend the landing gear. The damage to the aircraft consisted of bent propeller
