From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

Narrative: passenger reported that on may 16, 1997, American airlines flight 1140 from dfw to ric started to fill the cabin with smoke as aircraft approached the gate at ric. The flight crew shut down both engines, air conditioning packs, and APU. The smoke dissipated as soon as the cabin doors were opened. During the post flight inspection, the flight crew noticed oil running out of the APU area and removed the aircraft from service. American airlines maintenance personnel found oil leaking into the APU inlet and subsequently tightened a hydraulic line on the left engine reverse control valve. Maintenance replaced collesor bags, performed leak check, and pack burnout per manufacturers manual and returned the aircraft to service. Crew history information will be sent in as an amendment to this incident once it is received from the aala cmo.
