From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

Narrative: the pilot and passenger originally departed hayward airport on the morning of may 20, 1997. After landing at lee vining (024) and bishop (bih), N9670K arrived at Death Valley, furnace creek (L06) airport. The pilot flew over the field to check the wind tee and sock. He determined that runway 33 was favored and descended to make left traffic. He made two go arounds because he decided the final approach was too high. On the third approach, he was a little high so he dropped the nose to lose altitude. The airplane touched down near the center line. The pilot began braking but saw he was not going to stop on the runway, so decided to go off the runway to the left. The nosewheel buried in the soft dirt and the aircraft went up and then settled back down again with the nose of the aircraft buried in the dirt. The incident caused substantial damage to the aircraft but the occupants were not injured.
