From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

(-23) On may 25, 1997, at approximately 1830 CDT, a Piper PA-24-250 airplane, N7967P, owned and registered to two private individuals was substantially damaged during a forced landing in the vicinity of Ward, AR. The private pilot, sole occupant of the airplane was seriously injured. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed and no flight plan was filed. The flight originated from dogwood field (private airstrip near Ward, AR) at about 1700 CDT, while on return flight to dogwood field. The engine lost power and the pilot was forced to land. The forced landing occurred in a heavily wooded terrain. Examination of wreckage by an FAA inspector revealed that the left and right main fuel tanks contained zero gallons of fuel, the right auxiliary fuel tank was full. The fuel selector handle was found in the "off" position. The left auxiliary tank was 1/2 to 3/4 full. The pilot reported to the NTSB investigator that he felt the cause of the accident was attributed to "fuel starvation due to fuel mismanagement." The pilot subsequently participated in a remedial training program in lieu of enforcement action.
