From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

Narrative: on 6-18-97, Mr. David a. mcclurg, a private pilot, certificate #286367351, departed Allen county airport to do some local flying. At approximately 16:42 EDT, Mr. Mcclurg made an attempt to land at the Allen county airport. During the final flare out procedure on landing, he noticed that the aircraft seemed very low to the ground and the propeller was making a noise. At this time Mr. Mcclurg realized that the landing gear was not extended and made a decision to continue the landing, sliding down runway 27 and stopping on the left side of the runway with sustained minor damage. The pilot reported no injuries. When the mechanic, Mr. Donald schumann, arrived to raise the aircraft for removal from the runway, he noticed that the landing gear handle was in fact in the up position. With power on the aircraft, Mr. Schumann activated the landing gear handle to the down position and the landing gear extended to the down and locked position.
