From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

Narrative: on October 19, 1997, at 1112 CDT, at Carbondale, Illinois, during a taxi to runway 24, the pilot of N98834, a Cessna 310, applied the brakes to slow the aircraft. Upon applying the brakes, the left brake pedal went to the floor. Subsequently, the aircraft departed the taxiway and struck a runway end identifier light at the end of the runway with the left engine propeller. Aircraft damage was limited to the left propeller. The left engine crankshaft was inspected as per the manufacturers recommendations. A serviceable propeller was installed and the brake assemblies were re-built. This incident is closed with this report. An inspection revealed that the brake linings on the left brake caliper were worn which allowed fluid to leak past the piston o-ring. A completed malfunction and defect report is to be forwarded by the repairing mechanic.
