From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

Narrative: at approximately 1934 EST on December 8, 1997, a Piper PA-28-181, N22204, was involved in an incident at the Lexington bluegrass airport, Lexington, KY. The aircraft piloted by a private pilot receiving instruction from a rated flight instructor, struck the right side runway edge lights during the takeoff roll. Damage to the aircraft was minor and there were no injuries sustained to either pilot or instructor. The instructional flight was conducted under 14 CFR 141. An IFR flight plan was filed and ATC clearance was received for the local Lexington airport. Weather conditions at the time of the incident were marginal VFR in nature with light snow and fog. Investigation revealed that both airmen believed that when they taxied out onto runway 4 at Lexington that they were aligned with the runway centerline lights. However, they realized that after the takeoff roll that they had mistakenly alighted the aircraft on the right side runway edge lights thus, coming into contact with the runway edge lights.
