From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. Compare the reported make and model.

What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

Noticed fog forming. Returned to FDR in haste to avoid fog landed downwind and overran runway. Brake cable failed. (-23) on February 3, 1998, a Piper aircraft, N4654Z, landed at frederick municipal airport (FDR). After landing, the student pilot applied the brakes, and the cable, Piper p/n 40123-9, broke. The pilot was unable to stop the aircraft which ran off the end of the runway into a muddy field and flipped over at a terrace. The aircraft was substantially damaged, including the wings, and wing struts and vertical stabilizer. The brake cable was frayed and broken at the point where it travels around a pulley. The annual inspection was completed on November 18, 1997, and had about eleven hours of operation since the inspection at the time of this accident.
