Narrative: incident at Hyannis airport. On March 24, 1998 at approximately 12:45 pm I was piloting a rented Cessna 172 (N737SX). In preparation for departure, I received ATIS "w" which called for winds from 250 at 11 knots. Runway 24 was active. I received permission to taxi to runway 24 and prepare for an intersection departure at "b". I did a run-up at the end of the taxiway and found the controls to be free and correct. All aspects of the plane checked-out properly and I determined the aircraft to be airworthy. I received clearance from the tower to depart runway 24 at intersection "b". The windsock indicated winds blowing straight down the runway. I began to execute a normal departure, with no aileron correction. Just as I attained rotation speed of 52 knots, the plane started to abruptly veer to the left. I applied additional right rudder. The plane continued to veer sharply left and suddenly left the runway. I abortedthe take-off and attempted to control and slow the aircraft by cutting the throttle in order to taxi to an appropriate taxiway. Upon reaching taxiway "a" I disengaged the engine, and was notified by the tower to leave the plane in place. I have 191.5 total hours, 19 hours in the past 90 days. I underwent a biennial flight review on 7/20/98. I am taking instruction for an instrument rating and six of my last 8 flights, since 2/1/98, have been "dual" with a CFII. If I may be of further assistance, please contact me at once. Thank you, edward j. cochran. Pvt. Pilot cert. # 27327478.
