Narrative: arrived on scene at farm residence, privacy data omitted between Siler City and pittsboro at 8:20 am local time. Aircraft was an amateur built RV-6, N41TR. It was built by harold aspaugh in 1993. The aircraft is currently registered to tom a rudisill of privacy data omitted who was also the pilot. He was the only person aboard the aircraft during that flight. Mr. Rudisill was interviewed via telephone on the evening of 04-03-98 just after the incident occurred. He provided the following information: the aircraft N41TR, was flown from Siler City airport 5W8 with an intended destination of NC81 (cox) a private field near rdu where the aircraft is based. The aircraft had just undergone maintenance at the Siler City airport by winfield "scott" tanner of tanner aviation. Specifically, maintenance had been accomplished on the carburetor. The throttle shaft and bushings were removed and replaced. Other unrelated maintenance was also performed. This was verified by the maintenance record entry in the aircraft records and the invoice provided to the customer and later presented to the FAA. Upon departure from 5W8, the pilot circled the field several times to ensure that all the maintenance had been properly performed. The pilot then proceeded to continue the flight toward the destination. Approximately halfway to the destination, the pilot stated that he could smell raw fuel. This was followed by a partial loss of engine power which quickly led to a total loss of power. Emergency procedures were implemented but every attempt to regain engine power were unsuccessful. A forced landing was made into an unmaintained grass airstrip. As a result of the unsuitable condition of the turf airstrip, specifically the dense vegetation, the pilot was unable to maintain direction control on landing roll-out. This resulted in an on-ground collision with stationary objects. These objects consisted of seven fence posts. There were no injuries and the aircraft sustained only minor damage. Incident occurred at approximately 18:45 local time. An examination of the aircraft, flight control systems, engine and propeller revealed that there was no evidence of any pre-crash damage. When the engine cowling was removed the fuel line was found disconnected at the carburetor. The mechanic who performed the maintenance on the aircraft is winfield "scott" tanner. He was present and freely admitted that he had tightened the fuel line fitting only hand tight and did not fasten the fitting with a wrench. Mr. Tanner did not make any excuses for his actions and expressed regret for the error. According to isis, Mr. Tanner has no previous violation history. Guido f. hassig, aviation safety inspector. NARRATIVE: ARRIVED ON SCENE AT FARM RESIDENCE, ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTE^ BETWEEN SILER CITY AND PITTSBORO AT 8:20 AM LOCAL TIME. AIRCRAFT WAS AN AMATEUR BUILT RV-6, N41TR. IT WAS BUILT BY HAROLD ASPAUGH IN 1993. THE AIRCRAFT IS CURRENTLY REGISTERED TO TOM A RUDISILL OF ^PRIVACY DATA OMITTED^ WHO WAS ALSO THE PILOT.
