From the FAA’s Accident/Incident Data System (AIDS), through its Aviation Safety Information Portal, as reported. The NTSB investigates accidents separately, and its record of an accident is the fuller one. The aircraft is matched to the registry by N-number and event date, checked against the reported make and model; the registry’s history has gaps, so older matches can be wrong. What happened

The FAA’s narrative, in sentence case. The FAA writes it in capitals and removes private details.

Narrative: on may 5, 1998, at 1220 hours pacific daylight time, a north American sabreliner NA265-65, N651MK, experienced an uncontained engine failure during the takeoff roll at palm springs, California. The aircraft sustained minor damage; however, neither the pilot, copilot, nor any of the 6 passengers on board were injured. The aircraft was being operated as a business flight by mallinckrodt at the time of the incident. The flight was originating from the palm springs regional airport at the time. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed at the time and an IFR flight plan had been filed. The aircraft had been cleared for takeoff on runway 31L. The pilot initiated the takeoff roll, reaching about 70 knots, when there was a loud noise and the aircraft lost power. The pilot immediately performed a rejected takeoff and brought the aircraft to a stop on the runway. A post accident inspection revealed evidence of an uncontained failure of the right engine.
